What is Battery Service?
Battery service includes testing the battery with a voltmeter to see how much life is left. This service can prevent you from being stranded somewhere with a dead battery. If the voltmeter shows that the battery has very little life left, you can replace it now. The service technicians will inspect your cables and connections. If the connections are loose, they will tighten them. If they have corrosion around them, the technician will clean the connections. This service doesn’t take very long, but it can prevent major headaches later on.
Signs Your Battery Needs Attention
Sometimes a battery will stop working with no warning. Other times, you may see signs.
- Lights dim when you start the engine.
- The engine is sluggish in trying to start.
- The lights dim as you are driving or other electrical components may stop working for a few seconds.
- The battery needs to be jumped to start the engine, and you didn’t leave any lights on.
If the technician tests the battery and it is fine, they will look at the alternator and other components of the starter system. A bad alternator won’t recharge the battery as you’re driving. It can also cause the battery to fail and need to be replaced.
If the battery needs to be jumped and you have no other issues, you probably don’t need any other service. If you must jump the battery every time you start the vehicle, you need to bring it in for service. If your vehicle won’t start with a jump, you’ll need to have it towed in for us to look at.
